Mohindra College of Patiala
The Mohindra College is one of the oldest institute of higher studies in northwest India. The college was established for the people of Patiala in 1870 by the then Maharaja Mohendra Singh, a great supporter of modern languages. The college was started in 1875. The founder of the college was Lord Northbrook. Initially, the college was affiliated to the University of Calcutta when Calcutta city was the capital of British India. It is the first college of Punjab to get A+ grade ranking from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India. The design of the building is a real piece of art. The college remained the only educational institute between Lahore and Delhi for a long time.

The college imparts education to graduates and undergraduates in many streams such as arts , commerce and science. There are over 112 faculties in the college. The college campus covers an area of 21 acres. It is situated opposite the National Institute of Sports of India (NIS).

The college offers many facilities like a computer center,a library, a men’s hostel, a health center, an auditorium which has a capacity of 600 seats, a botanical garden and a highly structured sports infrastructure, mainly for swimming and cricket.

The University of Punjab was established in 1882 in Lahore (now in Pakistan) and Mohindra College was its first affiliated college. After the partition of India in 1947, the college came under the Punjab University, Chandigarh. In 1962, when the Punjabi University, was established in Patiala , Mohindra College came under the purview of this newly founded university.

Mohindra College gets funds from the University Grants Commission and the Punjab Government but the campus is maintained by the Public Works Department of the State government. The college provides help to students from the disadvantaged sections of society.

On March 14, 1988, a postage stamp on Mohindra College, Patiala was issued by Indian government to honour the old reputed college. Many students from distant places come here for receiving education.

Multani Mal Modi College
This college was started in 1967 by Mr Gujjar Mal Modi an industrialist and philanthropist. The then governor of Punjab, Dr Dharam Vira ICS laid the institue’s foundation stone on September 21, 1966. The first session of this college commenced in July 1967. At present, the Rai Bahadur Charitable Trust and the Modi Education Society manage this college. It is affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala. The college is a co-educational institution. It has a superb and modern campus .Many eminent persons such as Giani Zail Singh, Sh. K.R. Narayanan, Dr. R. C. Paul, Dr. D.C. Pavte, Dr. S. P. Singh and Sh. S. L. Kapoor, have addressed the college on the eve of its convocations.

Government Medical College
The Government Medical College is the second oldest college in Punjab. The college was established by the Union government. Prime Minister Nehru performed the opening ceremony in 1954. The college is attached with Rajendra Hospital, and the TB Hospital, both in Patiala ciy.

This is the biggest health institution and best medical college in the region. It has a beautiful building. The college has a big library with well ventilated reading rooms, a computer centre, a spacious auditorium and an open air theatre. There are four hostels; among them two for boys and two for girls.

Government Bikram College of Commerce
This college imparts education in the commerce field. It is one of those colleges that teaches exclusively in the commerce stream. Graduate and post graduate courses are offered by the college.

Government College of Physical Education
This college keenly works on the training of sports trainers. A person can study for the degrees of B.P.Ed and M.P.Ed from this college. The college is exclusively dedicated to develop talent among sports trainers.

Government College of Education
This college is for students who are interested in the teaching profession. They can study for their B.Ed /M.Ed. degree here.

Apart from the above institutes we also have the Thapar University and Punjabi University which are well known throughout the world.
