Punjab Govt Ignoring Thalassemia Patients
May 8 has been declared as ‘Thalassemia Day,’ but, this is limited to papers only.
The Punjab administration is showing no interest in controlling the deisease.
The administration has been accused of its slow response to Thalassemia, which, had led to the rapid spread of the disease in the country.
The reports said that the plans of the state health section are doing little to counter this disorder.
All are completly discontented with the administrative plans that neglect a disorder as widely-prevalent as thalassemia.
“If they can help patients of heart and kidney problems, why not thalassemia sufferers?” questioned media people.
In thalassemia, the illness takes place by the deteriorating and annihilation of RBCs.
Thalassemia is caused by alternate or absent genes, which have an effect on how the body creates hemoglobin. Hb is the protein present RBCs, which carries oxygen. People with thalassemia make less hemoglobin and fewer circulating red blood cells than normal, which results in mild or severe anemia. Thalassemia will present as microcytic anemia which may be differentiated from iron deficiency anemia using the mentzer index calculation.
Thalassemia can cause significant complications, including pneumonia, iron overload, bone deformities and cardiovascular illness. However this same genetic illness of RBCs may bestow a degree of protection against malaria, which is or was prevalent in the regions where the trait is common.
