April 22nd, 2013

Patiala: Set up in the year 1952 by Raj Vaidya Ram Parsad Sharma, Government Ayurvedic College and Hospital is fighting to stay afloat because of the cruel outlook of the Punjab administration and the college management.

The college was once measured a high-status ayurvedic organization of the nation.

On the proposals of the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM), the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of AYUSH, had blocked the Government Ayurvedic College from taking new pupils because of non-fulfillment of eligibility circumstances two years back.

The ministry had detected that Government Ayurvedic College had 24 teachers against the necessary figure of 36 teachers (32 for graduation and 4 for PG courses). Government Ayurvedic College also did not accomplish the condition of accessibility of one teacher in each section.

Punjab administration also detected that Government Ayurvedic College did not have an authentically practical ayurvedic hospital having the requisite patient load of 50% bed occupancy in indoor patient department. The average bed occupancy was just 20.75 %.

In 2012, Punjab administration had directed Government Ayurvedic College to fulfill the conditions till October 31, 2012. But it failed to do so. The college has not yet filled the vacant posts and the bed occupancy, too, has not improved.

While talking to media people, Dr. Ved Prakash Tyagi, CCIM president, stated whilst ayurveda was becoming popular in other regions of the nation with several new colleges coming up, this college had been seeing a constant downfall owing to the “wrong strategies” of the Punjab administration.

“There are many teachers in the college who are teaching subjects other than their specialisation and the government has approved them. For the betterment of the college and the hospital, the government should implement the CCIM norms in totality,” he said.

Dr Pardeep Kapil, college principal, stated that they would shortly hire 8 teachers with the intention that the college qualified for fresh admissions. He added that they had already taken the interviews and the administration would shortly make the appointments.
